REVITALIZE BAO VINH ANCIENT TOWN
University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City
Individual Project | Tai Le
Renovation Building | Hue, Vietnam | Spring 2022
Bao Vinh ancient town, once a bustling emporium in the realm of Hue, witnessed its zenith during the epoch spanning the 17th to the late 19th century, a period hailed as its gilded age. The present era has seen myriad transformative changes that have eroded the essence of this hallowed ground. Modern ones have gradually replaced valuable buildings of the past, while the ecological equilibrium stands perilously tainted, casting a deleterious pall on both human well-being and the urban aesthetic.
Contemplating the predicament, I embarked upon a quest to foster sustainable growth within this domain. Initially, I conducted a comprehensive survey to ascertain the extant state of the remaining ancient dwellings to evaluate their residual worth for preservation. Subsequently, I endeavored to delineate a vibrant urban expanse that would serve as a nexus for the residents to engage with visitors, thereby augmenting their revenue streams through tourism and fortifying the old town. Given Hue’s susceptibility to natural calamities and inundations, I accorded paramount importance to utilizing a modular system to facilitate facile construction, disassembly, and relocation.
